Lightweight marble is an installation- and maintenance-friendly support system. A thin marble, granite or natural stone slab is combined with a sandwich panel with a honeycomb core to reduce its weight and facilitate installation.
A composite is a combination of various materials with different properties. This combination gives the composite material superior mechanical characteristics of lightness and strength compared to individual materials.
Sandwich panels with a honeycomb core, covered with fibreglass skins and primed with epoxy or phenolic resin (Step Series), are used to reinforce marble and semi-precious stones.
These sandwich panels allow to reduce stone thicknesses, resulting in much lighter but equally strong tops and claddings increasing the strength of the final product. This method can be applied to any stone or ceramic material; it is not just restricted to marble and semi-precious stones.
Thanks to the use of sandwich panels, it is possible to halve the thickness of the marble slab using the "splitting" technique. The panel, glued to the marble using epoxy resins, absorbs the tensions caused by the gluing process, offering the slab permanent support.
Depending on the processes, you can use panels with fibreglass worked in such a way as to guarantee maximum bonding grip, or a totally impermeable skin so as not to have problems with infiltration during the cutting process.
CEL offers both possibilities by offering different types of panels such as COMPOCEL® AL and STEP SERIES.
CEL developed a solution for backlight panels. CLEARSTEP has been created as a support for white onyx and other light stones, where a backlight effect is required. CLEARSTEP, with its semi-transparent surface, is suitable for those applications where it is necessary to preserve the original colour of the stone.
On demand, CEL produce extra-size formats such as 2000x3000.
For restorations and new mosaic creations, the substrate material must be lightweight, moisture resistant and have excellent performance for durable bonding.
The Step series and COMPOCEL® AL can be used in exterior or interior applications.
The Step series and COMPOCEL® AL offer several advantages, lending themselves to use as a substrate to:
